Tying the Knot in at a Buddhist Wedding Blessing with Vince Cullen celebrant of Nalagiri House

A Wedding Celebration with a Difference

Vince was recently asked to help Moura and Eoin create a unique service of celebration to follow their registry office marriage. A day was set aside following the civil ceremony for Moura’s and Eoin’s family and friends to come together for a very special celebration of their union in marriage.

Each member of the ‘congregation’ was given a white ‘Khata’ scarf as a gift from the happy couple to remember this special day.

Later on in the ceremony, the marriage ‘knot’ was tied with five differently coloured ‘Khata’ scarfs, each one offered and tied by someone specially chosen by the Bride and Groom.

The colour blue representing the element of sky and the quality of spaciousness. The offering of a blue scarf bestows a blessing of wisdom on the bride and the groom.

The colour white representing the elements of air and wind. The offering of a white scarf bestows a blessing of peace on the bride and the groom.

The colour red representing the element fire and the quality of energy. The offering of a red scarf bestows a blessing of power shared equally by the bride and the groom.

The colour green representing the element of water and quality of fluidity. The offering of a green scarf bestows a blessing of confidence on the bride and the groom.

The colour yellow representing the element of earth which grounds and supports all of us. The offering of a yellow scarf bestows a blessing of happiness on the bride and the groom.

Buddhist Wedding Celebration (Vince Cullen - Wedding Celebrant) - Nalagiri Mindfulness - Hungry Ghost Retreats

Vince could not legally marry Moura and Eoin. The ceremony that was performed did not, of itself, unite the couple in marriage. That legal relationship as symbolised by the state of marriage already existed between them.

The ceremony was simply a celebration of that unification in the presence of their friends and family. It also offered them, and all who know and love them, the opportunity to add their blessing to the adventure upon which they were now embarking.
